Hangzhou Theatre, affiliated to Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture, is a direct cultural institution of Zhejiang Province. Founded in 1978, the theatre is a comprehensive art theatre personally approved by Premier Zhou Enlai before his death. It is a classic work of Chinese theatre architecture in the 1970s. In 2000, in order to welcome the 7th China Art Festival, it was renovated and expanded as a key construction project of Zhejiang Province, and became one of the landmark large-scale public cultural facilities in Hangzhou and one of the best performing theaters in Zhejiang Province.
Since its establishment, the institute has received more than 1,000 domestic and foreign art troupes, staged more than 3,800 Chinese and foreign excellent plays, and received 5 million visitors, with an average attendance rate of 78%.
